ACTIVITIES OPPORTUNITIES RUN BY THE COUNTY ACTIVITIES TEAM
Nottinghamshire Scouts are offering a whole variety of activities during 2010, we have expanded the programme yet again offering a even wider choice of activities.
Our aim is to provide a diverse range of activities that will supplement your existing programme, as we recognise that outdoor activities are a vital part of Scouting.
This outdoor element is essential to develop our youngsters so please read this brochure, if nothing appeals to you then please pass it on to another leader in your group who may be interested. You will find in this brochure opportunities for both youngsters and for adults.
Nottinghamshire Scouts organise and run this programme of activities as support to Scouting in Nottinghamshire. Some of the activities are led by volunteers and some use outside providers, this is made clear for each activity. However all activities are run to the highest standards, with the safety of participants paramount. We aim to provide quality activities that complement your sections programme so providing safe fun activities.
A bursary scheme is available to subsidise the cost of any adult national governing body course, ask at the time of booking.

To secure a booking a completed Booking Forms MUST be sent within the 10 days to:-

An acknowledgement and receipt of the booking will be provided by return. Four weeks prior to the activity joining instructions and Health forms will be sent out to participants or group leaders as appropriate.

Winter Walking Weekend
This weekend is intended for both Scouts and Explorer Scouts and is for mixed ability groups with walking in the higher parts of the Lake District, staying at Ennerdale Scout Centre. The cost includes all food, accommodation and supervision

Adults Hillwalking Training
This course is aimed at any adult who wants to get to Terrain One Standard, and will cover, navigation, group control, and equipment together with advice on routes.This course will be based at a Peak District Hostel with instruction from one of our experienced outdoor team. There may be the chance of being assessed for an activity permit, depending upon previous experience.

Walking Group Leader Award & Mountain Leader Award
The WGL award covers leadership skills and group management issues that are needed to lead a party of novices on open countryside, easy hills, and moors e.g. Dartmoor, Peak District, or Brecon Beacons. The ML Award (summer) qualifies the candidate to lead a group of hill walkers anywhere in the British Isles under summer conditions. The Award covers skills such as group management, navigation, security on steep ground, camp craft, access and conservation, weather forecasting, emergency procedures and personal equipment.

Rock Climbing & Walking Day
This is a half day Rock Climbing and half day Hill walking. For this activity we can accept groups of up to ten participants and two groups can be booked on each day, Ideal for Scouts & Explorers.

Rock Climbing Day
This is a full day Rock Climbing for up to 12 older Scouts or Explorers. This is a long day spent climbing a variety of routes at one venue; groups need to be keen to climb all day. There is the option of completing the Rock Climbing proficiency badge, to do this we need to add an extra evening before the day in Derbyshire please advise when booking £5 each

Adults Rock Climbing Training
This course is aimed at any adult who wants to be able to supervise single pitch rock climbing, and will cover set ups, group control, equipment, together with advice on routes. This can be for Novices or those with more experience who want to brush up their skills.
This course will be based at a Peak District Hostel with instruction from one of our experienced outdoor team. There may be the chance of being assessed for an activity permit, depending upon previous experience.

Single Pitch Climbing Supervisor Award
The SPA provides training and assessment on how to organise and supervise safe, effective and enjoyable sessions for relative novices on single pitch crags both in and outdoors. Ideal for anyone with personal climbing experience and is involved with taking Scouts climbing. The course is run by Thornbridge Outdoors and is the National Governing Body award for single pitch Rock Climbing.

Adult Leaders Climbing Weekend
The activities team are running a team climbing weekend in Derbyshire using two different venues on the 25 &26 September 2010. Any Adults who want to take part should contact either Steve Day or Steve Hind, especially aimed at the Scout Network.

Green Field Day
We will be running a training day in Green Field skills for those wanting to upgrade their Nights away permit, we will also be offering the chance to do a wild camping option.

Assessments for Activity Permits
For those wanting activity permits in hill walking, rock climbing, canoeing, sailing and power boating you will need to complete a practical assessment. These can be arranged by contacting the County Office.
Other Land Opportunities
Mountain Biking
This activity has really taken off, we are putting on more dates than last year to try match the demand. This is for Scouts, Explorers or Network members of up to 14 on each date, the routes can be chosen to suit the ability of the group. This is full days Mountain Biking locally in Sherwood Forest with a proven provider who provides instruction and bikes.

BMX Biking
The BMX Biking has proven to be a real hit so we are offering this again, for those of you who went on the County Camp you will had a go on the main field with the small bikes. So we are offering Monday evenings at Warsop, Nr Mansfield from 7 -9pm and cost £5 each which includes hire of bikes, instructor & safety gear, groups of up to16.

Water Activities
Water Weekend
This is an exciting weekend with the opportunity to sample a variety of different water activities, these include Kayaking, Open Canoes, Motor Boats and raft racing.
We are now offering more weekends but limiting the number on them to 30 each weekend. This will allow us to tailor the activities to the participant’s requirements, so if a group have 8 youngsters who want to do their One Star Canoeing then this can be arranged.
The options available are 1) Multi Activity, 2) Level 1 or 2 Powerboat course, 3) One or Two star Canoe & Kayaking or a mixture of some of these. Book your places initially and then sort the exact mix out nearer the time. These weekends are suitable for Scouts Explorers and Network members

Canoe & Kayak River Trip in Mid Wales
We will be doing a length of one the mid Wales rivers, this is the opportunity to gain experience in journeying in canoes or kayaks. Participants must be up to the 2 star standard in their chosen type of boat

Level One Powerboat
This is the real basic entry level for those with no experience at all in power boats. For Scouts over 12 years, it also qualifies as the power coxswain badge, one day course at Farndon.

Ideally for those with powerboat experience, but will start with the basics and gives a good grounding in powerboats for Explorers and Adults, two day course at Farndon.

This is the next level up and is appropriate for those providing safety boat cover for water activities with a power boat. Pre requisite level 2 power boat.

Come and try it Sailing
We are running come and try it sessions for groups to have a taster session in sailing. Groups of up to 12 participants of Scout, Explorer, Network or Adult members, these are either morning or afternoon sessions

Youth Sailing Courses
This is a eight week course in sailing for the complete beginner which will be up to the RYA youth stage 2, this will give you the opportunity to learn to sail either a single handed dinghy or help to crew a larger boat. The course is for Scouts and Explorer Scouts & will be held at Nottingham County Sailing club, at Hoveringham. All evening sessions are on Wednesday evenings starting at 6.30pm and finishing about 8.30pm. Those that attended last year or already hold the stage 2 or 3 can move on to the next level.

Sailing Instructors Course
This is a RYA Sailing Course for Dinghy Instructors. The course is open to any over 18’s who can sail dinghy's competently, a level 2 is a prerequisite, plus a first aid cert. Held locally by the East Midlands region of the RYA

Boat Inspections
Remember these need renewing every 3 years by the County. Also every year by the authorisation holder plus a check every time used.
