ACTIVITIES OPPORTUNITIES RUN BY THE COUNTY ACTIVITIES TEAM
2009 has seen a further expansion of the activities on offer to supplement your own programmes as we recognise that outdoor activities are a vital part of Scouting
Some of the activities are led by volunteers and some use outside providers, however all activities are run to the highest standards, with the safety of participants paramount.
A bursary scheme is available to subsidise the cost of any adult national governing body course.
Hillwalking & Climbing
Mountain Leader Award
The ML Award (summer) qualifies the candidate to lead a group of hill walkers anywhere in the British Isles under summer conditions. The Award covers skills such as group management, navigation, security on steep ground, camp craft, access and conservation, weather forecasting, emergency procedures and personal equipment. These courses are all Residential in Wales provided by Plas Y Brenin, the National Mountaineering centre.

Rock Climbing & Walking Day
This is a half day Rock Climbing and half day Hill walking. For this activity we can accept groups of up to ten participants and two groups can be booked on each day, Ideal for Scouts & Explorers.
18 July
Rock Climbing Day
This is a full day Rock Climbing for up to 12 older Scouts or Explorers. This is a long day spent climbing a variety of routes at one venue; groups need to be keen to climb all day. £5 each
4th July, 12th September
Adult Leaders Climbing Weekend
The activities team are running a rock climbing weekend at the Roaches in Staffordshire on the. Any Adults who want to take part should contact either Steve Day or Chris Smith. This course is specifically aimed at the Scout Network.
19 - 20 September
Assessments for Activity Permits
For those wanting activity permits in hill walking, rock climbing, canoeing, sailing and power boating you will need to complete a practical assessment. These can be arranged by contacting the County Office.
Other Land Opportunities
Mountain Biking
For Scouts/Explorers/Network. Routes can be chosen to suit the ability of the group. This is for a full day Mountain Biking locally in Sherwood Forest with a proven provider who will provide instruction and bikes.

BMX Biking
The BMX Biking has proved a real hit so we are offering this again, for those of you on the County Camp you would have seen Rich Camm on the main field with the small bikes. So we are offering Monday evenings at Bulwell, Nottingham from 7 -9pm and cost £5 each, which includes hire of bikes, instructor & safety gear.

Water Activities
Water Weekend
This is an exciting taster weekend with the opportunity to sample a variety of different water activities. Options available 1) Multi Activity Level 1 or 2 Powerboat 3) One or Two Star Canoe and Kayaking or a mixture. Book your places initially and then sort the exact mix out nearer the time. Additional charges will be made for recognised National Governing body awards. These weekends are suitable for Scouts, Explorers & Network.

Power Boat Courses
We have had a very successful year with Power Boat courses at Farndon and now with the purchase of a new boat and recently qualified additional instructors we are in a position to run wider range of courses. However all courses are for small numbers as the instructor pupil ratio is only 1:3.
Level One Powerboat
This is the real basic entry level for those with no experience at all in powerboats. For Scouts over 12 years, it also qualifies as the power coxswain badge. £20

Ideally for those with powerboat experience, for Explorers and Adults, two day course Two-day course at Farndon, Newark £50

Safety Boat
This is the next level up and is appropriate for those providing safety boat cover for water activities with a powerboat. Pre requisite level 2 powerboat. £50

Sailing Instructors Course
This is a RYA Sailing Course for Dinghy Instructors. The course is open to any over 18’s who can sail dinghies competently; a level 2 is a prerequisite, plus a first aid cert, at Plas Menai in North Wales. £400

Canoe & Kayak River Trip
We are going to paddle a length of the River Wye in Mid Wales, staying at Biblings Campsite on the side of the River Wye. This is the opportunity to gain experience in journeying in canoes or kayaks. £25

To secure a booking a completed Booking Form, together with relevant payment, MUST be sent to: - County Resource Centre, Trinity House, Unit One, Robey Close, Linby, Nottinghamshire, NG15 8AA
An acknowledgement and receipt of the booking will be provided by return. Four weeks prior to the activity joining instructions and Health forms will be sent out to participants or group leaders as appropriate.
Boat Inspections
Remember these need renewing every 3 years by the County. Also every year by the authorisation holder plus a check every time used.
