Central Notts Gold D of E Expeditions in Snowdonia

A lot of planning and training is needed to successfully complete Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions and for 16 Explorers & Scout Network members from Central Notts District those preparations began in earnest in the autumn of 2007. Steven Tupper, DESC, organised a training weekend in Edale and together with Explorer Scout leaders from the District tackled navigation, first aid and the other skills which would be needed for the challenging expedition in Snowdonia in 2008.
On the last weekend of March the participants split in 3 teams, with leaders as expedition supervisors, successfully completed a 3-day Practice Expedition in the Dark Peak in very wet and cold conditions. This all went well but highlighted where changes would be needed in estimating walking times for the qualifying expedition.

On Saturday 18th July 14 Explorers/Scout Network members set off with leaders from Carlton in 2 mini-buses for Snowdonia. The qualifying expedition of 4 days and 3 nights camping was carried out with 2 teams walking the route in an anti-clockwise direction and the other team clockwise.
