Summer 2010

Cornel Scout Centre

At the end of the holidays, Gemini Explorers joined forces with 88th Nottingham (Jesse Boot) Scouts for an action packed Snowdonia Experience. There home for 5 nights was the Cornel Scout Centre, a converted hill farmers cottage dating from the 1600's, situated in an isolated valley beside Llyn Crafnant a few miles up a single track road from Trefriw.

The first day kicked off with a visit to Llanberis for a bus tour inside the Dinorwig pumped storage power station or 'Electric Mountain', so called because it is built entirely in the mountainside. Travelling deep inside the mountain along some of the 10 miles of underground roads and then standing inside a cavern large enough to accommodate St. Paul's Cathedral, the Scouts and Explorers were expecting James Bond to appear at any time! After lunch beside Llyn Padarn and a visit to the National Welsh Slate Museum, it was off for 2 hours of testing time on a most amazing High Ropes course where members surprised themselves with their achievements.

The following day saw the group undertake some serious hillwalking with breathtaking views and a rare opportunity to look down on jet planes flying low through the valley below before returning for a traditional Camp Fire.

WalkingLlandudno was the destination for a busy schedule on Friday, starting off with tobogganing at the Ski Centre on the side of the Great Orme before travelling to the top for the Visitor Centre, more spectacular views and lunch, trips on the Cable Car and Cable Tramway, shopping on the Pier before heading for the beach with fish and chips for tea. Then it was back to the Centre to relax with a DVD showing of 'Up' complete with bowls of home made popcorn.

PioneeringSaturday was taken at a more sedate pace with a Pioneering project, an afternoon ramble around Llyn Crafnant followed by a BBQ before the mozzies drove everyone inside for Bingo with Prizes and then, all too soon, it was Sunday and time to clean up, pack up, load up and head off for home just as the first rain of the week began to fall.
