Scouts to start to 'Grow your own'
Beaver Scouts across Nottinghamshire have teamed up with a Bulwell based home and garden company to look at grow your own food and healthy eating.
The initiative launched by Richard Sankey & Son, a leading UK manufacturer of garden and horticultural products, is enabling Scout Groups across Nottinghamshire to learn about the benefits associated with ‘growing it yourself’ and healthy eating.
They have provided more than a thousand grow pots, seed trays, multi trays and cress seeds to local scout groups across Nottinghamshire in a bid to encourage more children to plant vegetable seeds, watch them grow and then eat them.
Beaver Scouts from the 15th Nottingham were the first to use the equipment ahead of it's release to the rest of the Scouts in September. The pots will be used during group night activities to learn how to grow cress and other items from seed.
“It’s a great sense of achievement when you produce a plant from a seed or cutting. By providing the tools to do this, we are raising awareness of the benefits of ‘growing it yourself’ amongst the younger generation,” explained Sankey brand manager, Claire McCamphill.
“Scouting has played a played a huge role in developing stronger communities for over a hundred years and this is a fantastic opportunity for us to partner with a thriving local business to promote healthy eating with a community focus,” said Matt Rooney Deputy County Commissioner.
“It is something the young people can really get stuck into whilst working towards their healthy eating badge,” added Matt.
