HI VIZ JACKETS/VESTS
This is an update by Steve Day ACC (Activities) regarding the wearing of Hi Viz jackets:
It is not County policy that Hi Viz jackets are worn for all Scouting activity involving, hiking, walking or similar.
The policy of the Scout Association is that the Leaders running an activity will complete a risk assessment. If in producing this risk assessment it is thought that the wearing of Hi Viz jackets is appropriate (for example, County Flag and NESST Hike) then they need to be worn. They are appropriate for night hikes on or near roads, they may be appropriate even in daylight. However in completing the risk assessment protective clothing (Hi Viz jackets) is the last thing to consider when dealing with risks, so try avoiding routes near roads. It is more important that other safety considerations have been considered first, like route choice, supervision, equipment and suitable training.
In open Countryside Hi Viz jackets are not appropriate to be worn all the time, but it is a very good idea for one to be carried to use in the event of an emergency.
