DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE SETS TREND AS MORE WOMEN VOLUNTEERS JOIN SCOUTS IN NOTTINGHAMSHIRE
The Duchess of Cambridge publically joined Scouts last year, leading to speculation of a ‘Duchess -Effect’
Since the Duchess joined the Scouts last year, 40 women in Notts have followed her lead and signed up as volunteers – an increase of 6%, new figures released today by The Scout Association have revealed.
This trend has been replicated in the UK as a whole. In total 1,350 women have signed up as volunteers since the Duchess joined the Movement – an increase of 3.2%. This compares sharply with 2011, when only 125 new female leaders joined the organisation.
Colette Morgan, a volunteer leader from Radcliffe on Trent Scout Group, said:
“I didn’t know how much time I’d have to volunteer, but Notts Scouts made it really easy to volunteer around my other commitments – and I volunteer flexibly and give as much or as little time as I’m able. I saw the Duchess in Cumbria doing some training last month. If someone as busy as the Duchess can find time to volunteer, anyone can! I couldn’t recommend volunteering more highly, I love it; I just wish I’d got involved sooner!”
