NOMADS Relaunch

The NOMADS (Network Of Mansfield And District Scouts) Are relaunching
They are going to be holding an open evening at Ollerton Scout and Guide Centre on Wednesday 15th July 2009 at 7pm
anyone who is 17 and a half to 25 can come along and find out what Network in Mansfield is all about.
New Chief Scout Appointed

Survivor personality and former cub and Scout Berar Grylls has been appointed as our New Chief Scout. Speaking about his appointment Bear said: I feel hugely honoured to be asked to take up this role as Chief Scout - it really is a dream come true. I have always loved helping young people live their dreams and to taste real adventure… as well as getting caked in mud! I also hope I can use this post to encourage masses of adults in the UK to volunteer as leaders. The young people in this country need them like never before, and we have more people wanting to join than there are places available. But by volunteering, adults can actively make a difference to young people’s lives in their community, and there is no better way to be part of an adventure and have loads of fun, than with the Scouts.”
Bear will be appointed later on in the year when current Chief Scout Peter Duncan's 5 year tenure comes to an end
Swimming Gala
As a linking activity we are going to hold a county Network and Explorer Swimming Gala. The Gala will be held on Saturday 18th July and will be at the Nottingham Boys' High School. This will be a free event with the racing starting at 6:30pm. Event Organiser Justin Fisher said "We want to ensure that there is a strong link between Explorers and Network in Nottinghamshire so that when Explorers reach Network ages they are already aware of their local Network groups and contact thus making the transition smoother. The Swimming gala is just one of a number of future events we have planned for both Network and Explorers."
To download the Poster and booking form click on the swimming gala picture above. All bookings must be returned by Monday 6th July.
It has come to the attention of the County Team recently that in the North of the county some of our Explorer Scouts/Scout Network/Leaders are unable to access a DofE Group, be it because some groups are unable to accept any additional young people, or there is no DofE Group available for them to attend. As a result, together with other Leaders, a new DofE Group for North Nottinghamshire will meet on Tuesday 2nd June at 7.30pm in the Small Hall of Ollerton Scout & Guide Activity Centre. This group will meet monthly and the meeting night will alternate between Tuesdays and Fridays. If you have young people who are already working towards their DofE but may be searching for an Expedition Group, then hopefully, we may be able to assist in this area also. Please ask all those interested to come along to this first meeting - if it is your usual meeting night, just for once I would appreciate it if they came along on that night - they can then revert to Fridays every other month if necessary. Ollerton has been chosen as central for the North Notts area. More than likely it will involve travel for the participants and where possible (and for environmental reasons) it would be helpful if car sharing could take place. There are some parking facilities at Ollerton Scout & Guide Activity Centre. If you are interested in participating in the DofE Awards Scheme or even the Queen's Scout Award scheme, please come along on Tuesday 2nd June at 7.30pm and talk to us. We will do the best we can to help you. Steve Cree A.C.C. (10½-25 year olds)New D of E Group for North Notts

Cavendish Network raising money for Scouts
Cavendish Network unit will be bracing themselves to not only get fit but to raise money in the process. Members of CNU will be putting their paces through the test with a 24 hour Bikeathon seeing how far as a group they can cycle up and down the UK. The money raised will help send children from the 7th Nottingham Group on a once in a lifetime trip to Austria over the summer. If you can help support CNU in anyway, please contact Justin or to download a sponsor form, please click on the picture above.

County Mad a big success!!!

This years County Mad has once again proved to be a big success with over 300 children taking part in team challenges designed to test their mental, physical and team working skills. An event this size needs help to run smoothly and that was certainly the case this year. The MAD Team would like to thank all leaders/helpers and Network members that helped run bases, check the children in, add up scores, do tea runs and generally help out where needed. we hope to see you again next year.
D of E

The main awards of The Chief Scout's Platinum, Chief Scout's Diamond and The Queen's Scout Award are linked to a Duke of Edinburgh Award. If you haven't already done so, you should consider registering for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award now. It will give you extra recognition for your achievements in Scouting.
To obtain a The Queen's Scout Award you need to either hold the DofE Award at the appropriate level or complete four challenges. The four challenges for each of the main Awards are exactly the same as the sections of the D of E Awards, namely:
· Skills · Physical Recreation · Service · Expedition ·
There is an extra challenge of a five-day residential experience for The Queen's Scout Award (and Gold DofE Award). If you would like to register for D of E please contact Steve Cree or if you want more information you can contact the County D of E Advisor Dave Henson at the following link: ca.dofe@nottinghamshire-scouts.com
