CHILWELL SCOUTS SLEPT OUT TO RAISE CASH TO AID HAITI RELIEF

Scouts from 2nd Chilwell were that moved by recent coverage of the Haitian disaster that they asked their Scout Leaders to help them to raise funds. Particularly they followed the story of a 23 year old Haitian Scout Leader called Wilner Ulysse from Leogane (a small town close to the epicentre of the earthquake), who has been supporting in a humanitarian aid centre. He has been preparing hygiene gifts like soap, toothpaste and towels which are delivered throughout the town.

The 20 Scouts, who have been inspired by Wilner's story, slept 'rough' for the night at Drum Hill camp Site Nr Derby in order to raise money to support orphaned children, some of them Scouts, in Haiti.

County Commissioner Kathryn Wills, said "It is wonderful to see the Scouts doing their best to support the victims of the Haitian earthquake. I am so proud to see young people being proactive and playing their part to help other people."

The Scouts built temporary shelters out of natural materials, tarpaulins and cardboard boxes, cooking over open fires and making do with what limited provisions that were supplied.

If you’d like to support the Scouts help the orphaned children of Haiti please give all you can to help those that have nothing left. http://www.justgiving.com/2ndChilwellScoutsSleepOutForHaiti

ACTIVE CITIZENS: VIRGIN VOTERS – YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN LOCAL AND NATIONAL ACTIVITY

With a general election coming up Scouting in coalition with Oxfam GB, UK Youth Parliament and the Hansard Society, wants youth members age 14  - 25 and leaders to participate in Active Citizens: Virgin Voters on 13 March 2010 from 11am to 1pm at the Belgrave Rooms (Masonic Hall), 25 Goldsmith Street, NG1 5LB. This is a chance for young people in Scouting to meet their prospective parliamentary candidates and council candidates and make their views known to both the people that want to represent them and with their peers from their community.   Whether a “virgin voter” or currently involved or interested in local volunteering or  national campaigns through Scouting and other organisations,  this forum for young people offers the chance for you to share your views with the people that seek your support.

This event is open to young people within Scouting, but if this is an opportunity your friends not in Scouting may be interested in, please do let us know! THIS IS A NATIONAL EVENT BEING HELD IN NOTTINGHAM, SO IT WOULD BE GREAT TO SEE AS MANY NOTTS EXPLORER SCOUTS AND SCOUT NETWORK THERE AS POSSIBLE!!!

We want as many young people as possible who would like to participate in Active Citizens: Virgin Voters to do so. We will be providing refreshments on the day and we will be entering all Nottinghamshire/Nottingham City participants into a mystery prize draw!!

So what are you waiting for?!? Email Matt Rooney or call on 07793408963 to book your place or find out more.
